The Oscar Jackson Outdoor Camp was originally launched in 2013 by the City of Bainbridge under the name of  Jack Wingate Camp. Jack Wingate was a local Decatur County historian and fishing legend. He operated the "Fishing Camp for Boys" out of Wingate’s Lunker Lodge for 33 years. The Lunker Lodge helped make Lake Seminole a popular hunting and fishing destination over the years in the Faceville community of Decatur County.

In 2016, the camp was renamed The Oscar Jackson Outdoor Camp in honor of Dr. Oscar Jackson. Jackson was a local conservationist who was heavily involved in the tri-state water wars between Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. He served on the Governor's Advisory Committee on water issues, and spent countless hours attending meetings on behalf of protecting South Georgia's water resources. Jackson also owned the very property that the camp now resides on, as well as the catfish pond each camper enjoys fishing from during their time at the camp.

The camp was created to not only spotlight Bainbridge’s rich abundance of natural resources, but to also provide the children in our region with an exciting summer program. The City of Bainbridge wanted to establish a program that would encourage children to cultivate useful outdoor skills, and discover more about the nature surrounding our beautiful community. We at the Oscar Jackson Camp hope to give children a reason to power off their cell phones, video games, and televisions to immerse themselves in nature. Through programs such as archery, fishing, fire-building, hunter safety, and wildlife discovery, we enable the children in the Oscar Jackson Camp to find their passion and excel.
